The Gifts of the Lunar Cycle

How the Moon Can Help Us Slow Down, Realign and Remember What Matters
We live in a culture that often asks us to move in a straight line: keep going, keep producing, keep improving.
But nature doesn't work that way.
The Moon grows bright and then disappears. The seasons open and close. The tide comes in and goes out. There are times for beginning, times for building, times for celebrating—and times for letting go.
Perhaps one of the gifts of paying attention to the Moon is simply remembering that we are allowed to have cycles, too.
A Different Kind of Calendar
The lunar cycle takes about 29½ days, moving from New Moon to Full Moon and back again.
In Moonology, we can think of this cycle as a kind of energetic map.
The New Moon offers a natural moment to become quiet and ask: What would I like to begin? What would I like to invite into my life?
As the Moon waxes, we nurture those intentions through attention and action.
At the Full Moon, the light is at its brightest. Symbolically, this can be a beautiful time to notice what has become clearer. What has grown? What can we celebrate? What might we finally be ready to release?
And then the Moon begins to wane.
Rather than seeing this as a loss of light, I like to think of it as permission.
Permission to exhale.To edit.To forgive.To rest.To make space.
And eventually, we begin again.
You Don't Have to “Do” the Moon Perfectly
Working with the Moon doesn't require an elaborate altar, a collection of crystals or an encyclopedic knowledge of astrology.
You can begin very simply.
Look up.
Notice what the Moon is doing.
At the New Moon, write down one intention—and one action you can take to participate in bringing it to life.
At the Full Moon, ask yourself what has become clearer and what you may be ready to loosen your hold on.
And during all the days in between, simply pay attention.
You might be surprised by what you begin to notice.
The Moon as a Practice of Remembering
For me, spiritual practices are most meaningful when they bring us more deeply into our actual lives.
The Moon can become one of those practices.
Not something outside of us telling us what is going to happen, but something above us reminding us to periodically turn inward and ask:
Where am I right now?
What am I nurturing?
What needs my participation?
What am I ready to release?
There is something wonderfully reassuring about knowing that no phase lasts forever.
If you're in a season of tremendous growth, savor it.
If you're in a season of uncertainty, perhaps you don't need all the answers yet.
If you're in a season of endings, perhaps making space is part of what comes next.
And if you're ready for a beginning, there will always be another New Moon.
Moonology begins with noticing.
Maybe that's enough.
